Shells are created by (and attached to) soft-bodied mollusks like clams, scallops, oysters, sea snails. The mollusk absorbs minerals from the ocean, then secretes layers of calcium carbonate with proteins to build its shell bigger and stronger as it grows. The shell is what protects the mollusk. When the mollusk dies, the empty shell is left behind and will no longer grow. #seashells #lightningwhelk | Let's Go Shelling

Save this and read below! ⬇️ . Mollusks with double sided shells are known as bivalves (two valves). The orange hinge you see at the bottom is made up of an elastic protein and holds the two shells together, while the mollusk's strong adductor muscles keep the shells closed. . If you see this, the mollusk is very likely to be alive. An empty bivalve could still have it's hinge, but you would see an opening with no animal inside. . Did you know this? So, can we take home this seashell? 🐚⬇️ . In this case, no it would not be ethical to keep this shell because it's likely the animal is still inside. 🥹 . Never taking living shells or creatures is a BIG key to Ethical Shelling and sustaining this hobby. 🙌🏼 . The reason we have seashells is because mollusks create them, so we want to let these animals thrive to keep reproducing! 💙 . Always be sure your seashell finds are empty before taking them home 🙏🏼 .
