C.W. McCall’s “Old Home” campaign for Old Home Bread in the 1970s wasn’t just an ad series—it was a cultural phenomenon. Created by adman Bill Fries (who later became McCall), the commercials told the story of a trucker and a diner waitress named Mavis in a small-town setting. With a mix of humor, charm, and catchy jingles, the campaign captured hearts and boosted sales. The success of the ads led Fries to adopt the C.W. McCall persona and launch a country music career, including the smash hit “

C.W. McCall wasn’t a real trucker, but he sure sounded like one. Born Bill Fries, he created the character for an Old Home bread commercial, then turned it into a music career. His talkin’-blues style made Convoy a smash hit in 1975, kicking off a CB radio craze and inspiring a movie. With songs like Wolf Creek Pass and Black Bear Road, he captured the spirit of the open highway. Later, he traded diesel smoke for mountain air, serving as mayor of Ouray, Colorado. #convoy #americana | Truck Stop
